Jerome's & Darrow Federal manner hand made shelf clock with wood works, Bristol CT. Provenance, Martin VanBuren Back, 1835-1920 (may already have been in the family for a generation.) We purchased from his direct descendant, David N. Back in the 1990s. We had the clock last serviced in 2006 and in good running order with reliable chimes. Having invested in preservation, our gain will have been our enjoyment of the clock. 2nd quarter, 19th century. Good condition. Height, about 34 3/4 inches. We will defer to a professional shipper for such an item - cost to be arranged between buyer and shipper.

Spoils of Time
A good cloisonne vase depicting Mt. Fuji in clouds using 'musen' (wireless) technique with pleasing affect. The foreground with pagoda in autumnal landscape against mountain and river landscape - the mountains again using wireless technique to suggest fading into the distance, and the river also using 'musen' to suggest the flowing of water. The back of the vase continues the light blue mottled sky. Silver plated rims. Not signed, so we stop short at saying it is Ando school. Excellent condition. 4 7/8 inches (12.385 cm) tall. (Our 10th and last image photographs the vase upside down to avoid glare on the wireless area depicting Mt. Fuji - rotated upright for presentation.)

Height, little more than 2 1/4 inches (about 5.75 cm). Spoils of Time
$635.00
An Ao-Kutani palette porcelain deep dish in the Yoshidaya manner. Hydrangeas decoration in polychrome enamels including white, light blue-green, and dark green, blue, blue-green and aubergine in black line, all on yellow ground, a chocolate brown enamel on the otherwise unglazed biscuit rim. The number and subtlety of hues but consistent for palette is pleasing. The back with enamels including dark green on black line decoration of clouds. Kutani mark in black under yellow glaze inside the foot ring which appears to have been glazed but with the enamel rubbed along high points to the porcelain body. A couple of kiln kisses to the cloud decoration area on the back. The so called Yoshidaya type of 19th century Ao-Kutani wares is named for a merchant who revived production of a particular palette of Ko-Kutani production (of the 17th and early 18th century) adjacent to the original kilns. The current example certainly appears to be 19th century and could possibly be from the Yoshidaya kiln. Later Ao-Kutani palette production is often ambitiously ascribed to the Yoshidaya kiln which, in fact, operated only briefly from the 1820s to the early 1830s. One 3/16 inch flake (mostly to the enamel) under the rim. Otherwise good condition considering expected scratching and rubbing of the enamel. Presents well. Diameter, 11 7/8 inches (30.16 cm)

A fine and rare Pennsylvania Dutch Amish folk art candle box carved from a single piece of yellow pine (no joining at all). The interior hollowed and the interior sides hand planed. One side with bas relief carved hex motifs. The other side with the initials, IF and IB (if read left to right, though not sure of the intended order), likely of a married couple and with other carved and incised adornment including hearts. Fitted, sliding top (the only exception to it being wholly one piece). Possibly a wedding gift. At least 19th century and possibly 18th century. In addition to the distinctly Dutch Amish carved decoration, yellow pine is typical of the Pennsylvania home to the community - used extensively in furniture of the region. Wonderful, lovingly used condition with undisturbed patina. Very good condition with expected wear and natural checking along the wood grain. Length, up to 15 1/4 inches at the longest points (with variation to about 15 inches at points)

Two good Arita blue and white mamezara. One rare mokko-gata form with Namban decoration of a foreigner in landscape falconing and with a hunting dog in a square reserve enclosed within a band of reversed out (or negative) decoration of white cranes and clouds on a blue background, the verso with a narrow band of cloud decoration also on a blue background and with faint celadon pooling along the foot rim (fair to good condition but two small chips inside the foot rim and a small glaze abrasion just above the foot rim) about 3 15/16 inches (10 cm) square. The other Kraak style with chocolate glazed foliate rim and liberally applied cobalt blue decorated eight panels with bird and flower alternating with lotus motif surrounding a similarly decorated central roundel, the verso also with 8 flower decorated panels around the foot centering a spurious Chenghua mark (good condition with a little kiln grit inside the foot) about 4 inches (10.15 cm) diameter. Some Kakiemon production (also with chocolate brown rim and clean white body and glaze) copied the Kraak style.

$550.00
A fine Arita blue and white four lobed bowl. Decoration of Sennin Chokaro with his gourd attribute in landscape, centered by extraordinary shironuki (drawn in white) decoration in the cavetto - each of four panels with a different auspicious figure and attributes. The outside of the shaped rim and sides also with simple shironuki decoration of a water border and a lotus blossom floating at each, dimpled corner. This accomplished work would have issued from aristocratic patronage rather than standard kiln production. Faint celadon tinge in the pooled glaze along the footrim. 18th - early 19th century. One flake inside the rim otherwise good condition. 5 7/8 to 6 inches (14.92 to 15.24 cm) across at the corners. About 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) high.
