item: #1091266
price: Sold in Vervendi auction

A 19th century Korean mother of pearl inlaid black lacquer mirror chest comprised of two drawers and double hinged top all raised on base with corner bracket feet. The mirror stand missing from within (as is often the case.) Cranes and peaches among clouds in fret border decoration adorns the top, flower decoration on the sides and bamboo decoration on the back. The front with patterned decoration centering bamboo leaf motif on the drawers. Star or blossom patterned bands line the drawer divider facings. The shaped skirt on all four sides of the base also with floral blossom decoration. Metal fixtures for hinges, corner and side braces, side and drawer handles, and lock plate (boss on lock plate missing.) Decent condition as far as an example of Korean lacquer objects go: Some distress and losses - not detracting from decorative impact particularly considering the more primitive, Korean interpretation. Would conserve or restore more easily than the typical Japanese lacquer. Length, 11 1/2 in (29.2 cm). Width, 8 7/8 in (22.5 cm). 7 5/8 in (19.36 cm). Shipping extra
