item: #1131356
price: sold

A good Suzhou school celadon colored nephrite jade snuff bottle. Fairly well hollowed and adeptly carved to cleverly use natural russet on white colored skin, subtle color differences in the light green stone, and white inclusion along the foot on one side. Relief carving includes chrysanthemums rising from lighter colored rockery on one side. The other side with weeping prunus (following subtle inclusion) descending from russet rockery toward an area of white inclusion along the foot suggestive of snow (see lower-right of our last enlargement.) It could be said that one side represents Winter and the other side Summer. Particular attention to detail is given to rockery decoration extending through the foot where it continues to take advantage of slight color variation in the stone. The surface throughout exhibiting evidence of exclusively hand tooling. Late 18th to early 19th century. Excellent condition. Height without cap about 2 1/2 inches (6.3cm). (Some of our illustrations suggest a soft earth tone in the middle of the bottle but is actually a light reflection of the wood surface used when photographing - the color of the bottle actually being a consistent light green-celadon with mild color variation except for some distinct russet and white skin.)
